I have found myself at different times wandering the store or several stores, looking for the perfect decoration or wall art for my house. You have an idea in your head on what size, color, picture etc. that will work perfectly but then stuck searching for it, or like me find the perfect thing and its over the top expensive. There are many times I never find the right thing and wish I could create the very thing I need. Well why can't you create the very thing you need? Let's get crafty.
1.Stained Wood Art
This idea came from wanting to give out a personalized gift however I certainly made a few for myself and love displaying them. Head to a local hardware store to buy wood. Typically hardware stores have many different sizes to choose from and can be cut to length however needed. I chose to cut these at 24 inches in length and they are about an inch deep by 6" wide. Of course depending on what you're making, or how many your planning for you can pick accordingly.

Take your pieces, lay them flat, gloves are always a good idea and let's get to staining. Choose your color or colors. I use regular craft paints. For this project I went with a brown and a black because I wanted a bit of a darker brown stain look for the background. You say but these are paints, not stains. Yes, a fabulous technique is using paint and diluting it with a small amount of water. So, you'll want a cup of water to use as needed.

Now take a paint brush and add some paint to a section of the wood to start, then take a damp rag and smooth in the paint while dipping your rag into your water or adding more paint as needed to darken or lighten and thin out the paint. You'll notice the character in the wood showing through. Continue creating the look you're envisioning while staining all of your pieces to your liking, then let dry

Now for the creative designs and decorating. You don't have to be a mastermind artist for this part. Pick something easy to free hand. I chose trees for this project. One, because I was making this for Christmas gifts but two, painting trees are easy. Try flowers, random patterns, or whatever works for the design you're going for.

There you have it, a wonderful homemade gift that demonstrates your thoughtfulness and care in creating something unique.

Of course it's always great to make a few for yourself too....

2.Canvas Wall Art
This concept emerged because I needed to fill a large empty wall. Initially, I was uncertain about how to utilize this expansive space in a guest room. I explored my craft room for inspiration and discovered a collection of 8x8 blank canvases in my closet and began painting. Again just like the project above. I grabbed some simple craft paints. I didn't want a lot of colors so I stuck with two main choices, a beige and a white.
These art pieces quickly came to life, one by one and before I realized I found the best artwork for my wall. I painted different patterns and pictures for each one.

Typically, I wouldn't have chosen the 8x8 size, but together these canvas's cover the wall perfectly. The project ended up being a joint effort of creativity between myself, my husband, and kids. This truly added a personal touch to the room and definitely added a conversation piece!

3.Cork Board or Wall Art?
We frequently find ourselves surrounded by various items in our homes that have loved over time, yet we often struggle with the dilemma of where to place them or whether they still hold any practical use. This internal conflict can lead us to question whether we should keep the item tucked away in a corner, gathering dust, or if it's simply time to give it away. However, this situation also presents a unique opportunity to tap into our creative sides and transform these items into something that better suits our personal needs and aesthetic preferences.
For instance, I had a cork board that I didn't particularly need at the moment. Instead of simply putting it in the back of a closet or deciding to part with it, I started to think outside the box how to repurpose it in a way that would add value to my space. This is where the magic of creativity comes to life. I decided to grab some craft paint and embark on a project to turn the cork board into a decorative piece of art that could be hung on the wall.
I envisioned a design that featured half of a flower, an idea that felt both simple and charming. I began the process of painting, allowing the idea to evolve organically as I worked. The beauty of this approach was that it was a simple freehand idea, which meant I didn't have to worry about perfection or precision; instead, I focused on letting my creativity flow. As the colors began to blend and take shape on the cork board, I could see my vision coming to life, transforming an item that might have otherwise been discarded into a unique piece of art that brought joy and character to my home.

This allowed me to declutter some but also a good reminder that sometimes, the things we think we no longer need can be reimagined and repurposed in ways that enrich our lives and surroundings. By embracing the opportunity to get crafty, we can breathe new life into forgotten items, making them not just functional but also beautiful additions to our homes. This is now one of my favorite things.
